Again, another scathing report came out today, describing how a synthetic substitute "blood" really raised the risk of heart attack and death; however, the FDA continued to allow testing. Despite all the red flags and warning signs that continued to pop up. In an effort to find a substitute for blood, which the companies state would be an incredible breakthrough being that they would not have to refrigerate it, it can be used regardless of blood type, and would be excellent, particularly in emergency situations and in the battlefield. However, one of the real reasons that there is so much interest in this is because there is so much money in it.
Reading this reminded me of what we hear recently about the Tuskegee Experiment in Alabama, which went from 1932 to 1972, in which 399 Black men who had late stages of syphilis, who had sought treatment and unknowingly were never treated, and in fact, were actively discouraged from being treated anywhere else and despite government rulings mandating treatment for venereal disease, the United States public health system actively encouraged this experiment to see the effects of not treating syphilis. Many of the men died from the disease while others died from complications of the disease.
It seemed hard to imagine then, and it seems hard to imagine today that the pharmaceutical companies and at this point, possible collaborators, the FDA, do not have your best interests in mind, but instead have money in mind.
